The United Nations’ (UN) World Humanitarian Day is held on August 19 each year. The day honors all humanitarians who have worked in the promotion of the humanitarian cause, and those who have lost their lives in the cause of duty. It aims to increase public awareness about humanitarian assistance activities worldwide and the importance of international cooperation.

The United Nations’ (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.

Dog Days of Summer

On August 9th, honor all the bookworms and book lovers in your life. If you are a book lover yourself, then treat yourself to some quality reading time.

National Grandparents Day was first created by Marian McQuade before 1973. However, it wouldn’t be recognized as a holiday on a State level until March 27th, 1973 when it became recognized by West Virginia. Thanks to President Jimmy Carter and Senators Robert Byrd and Jennings Randolph introducing official legislation into the Senate, it officially became a national holiday on August 3rd, 1978.

Campfire Day and Night was unofficially created in 2017 by Bob Matthews of Rochester N.Y. In researching special holidays for over a dozen years, Bob was simply amazed that no one had created a special day to celebrate and appreciate campfires. So we now celebrate campfires on the first Saturday in August.
