ANNOUNCES THE FOLLOWING:
AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC
FULTON, HAMILTON, HERKIMER, MONTGOMERY OR SARATOGA COUNTY RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED
This is a permanent vacancy in the Fulton County Highway and Facilities Department.
2023 Salary Range: $20.08 Per Hour (Start Rate) - $23.63 Per Hour (After One Year of Benefits Eligible Service)
Typical Work Activities (Illustrative but not exhaustive):
Makes skilled repairs to gasoline and diesel motor equipment, e.g., trucks, automobiles, hand operated power tools, tractors, graders, bulldozers, hydraulic excavators, bucket loaders, gradalls, rollers and other construction equipment;
Diagnose and correct the causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation;
Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, shock absorbers and muffler systems;
Overhaul, adjust and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions and differentials; ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking and complex hydraulic systems; steering, wheel and suspension mechanisms;
Rebuild and repairs starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air and hydraulic spreaders, small engines, mowers and hydraulic excavators, etc.)
Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake system, and air conditioning;
Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;
Aligns wheels and changes tires;
Makes minor welding and cutting repairs to automotive and construction equipment, body repair and painting;
Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filters;
Tunes engine and sets the timing;
Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
Works as a motor equipment operator when directed;
Makes road calls, test drives equipment, completes reports, uses parts catalogs and performs related duties;
May perform general mechanical maintenance on a variety of stationary equipment;
May perform a variety of duties in keeping records, making purchases of fuel oil and in preparing specifications in motor equipment purchases;
May supervise Automotive Helpers;
May operate a school bus on an assigned route;
May test and qualify bus drivers under Article 19-A of Vehicle and Traffic Law;
May perform required inspections on all classes of vehicles in accordance with New York State Department of Motor Vehicle Rules and Regulations.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, or a high school individual education plan diploma and EITHER:
(A) An Associate's Degree in automotive or diesel repair technology, or
(B) Completion of a Career and Technical Education Program in Automotive Technology or a closely related field and one year of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems; or
(C) Two years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems.
Special Requirement:
If the position requires operation of a Commercial Motor Vehicle, possession of a current valid Commercial Driver’s License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is required.
If the position requires the performance of inspections on any class of vehicles, possession of a certified Motor Vehicle Inspectors License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is required.
NOTE: Possession of an appropriate motor vehicle operator's license is required. If position requires operation of a school bus, special licensing procedures apply and applicants must be certified by the school district as meeting requirements promulgated by the New York State Commissioner of Education.
If qualifying by A or B (education options), a copy or photocopy of your certification or official academic transcript showing courses taken and degree conferred (if a degree is required) must accompany your application. If submitting a photocopy, this office must be able to verify it is an official transcript. Your transcript does not have to be submitted in a sealed envelope from the Registrar’s Office. If your transcript, as previously described, does not accompany your application, your application will be disqualified.
