WHEREAS, on August 26, 1920 the Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, changing the face of those entitled to vote forever; and

WHEREAS, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution reads:

 “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.  Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation”;

and

WHEREAS, upon the enactment of the 19th Amendment, more than eight (8) million women across the United States voted in elections for the first time; and

WHEREAS, August 26, 2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, protecting and guaranteeing every woman’s constitutional right to vote; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes the momentous achievement of suffrage pioneers such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth and many others in pursuing and achieving voting rights.
