CDC Releases New Guidelines for Respiratory Viruses
The CDC has released new guidelines for Respiratory Viruses, including Influenza, Covid, and RSV.
When people get sick with a respiratory virus, the updated guidance recommends that they stay home and away from others. For people with COVID-19 and influenza, treatment is available and can lessen symptoms and lower the risk of severe illness. The recommendations suggest returning to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, it has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication.
Once people resume normal activities, they are encouraged to take additional prevention strategies for the next 5 days to curb disease spread, such as taking more steps for cleaner air, enhancing hygiene practices, wearing a well-fitting mask, keeping a distance from others, and/or getting tested for respiratory viruses. Enhanced precautions are especially important to protect those most at risk for severe illness, including those over 65 and people with weakened immune systems.
For all the updated guidance visit: cdc.gov/.../p0301-respiratory-virus

May is Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) Awareness Month
Just 3 seconds of shaking can cause brain damage, paralysis, blindness, learning and behavior difficulties, and even death. SBS is responsible for 95% of serious head injuries in children under 1 years old. The average age of SBS victims is 6 months old. Continuous crying is the number one reason caregivers shake babies.
The good news is that SBS is completely preventable. These tips can help parents and caregivers prevent SBS:
⢠When your baby is crying, they may need a diaper change, be hungry, tired, sick, too hot or cold. Or they may just need to be calmed down.
⢠Make a coping plan for when babyâs crying is stressful. Write down what soothes your baby, such as rocking, offering a toy, going for a walk, or listening to music. Share this information with everyone who cares for your baby.
⢠If you need a break from your babyâs crying, place your baby in a safe place, such as a crib or playpen, and take a break. You may also want to call a friend for support, or contact your health care provider for further guidance.
⢠When holding your baby, always support the babyâs head. Make sure everyone who has contact with your baby knows how to properly support the head when holding, carrying or playing with your baby.
⢠Discuss with family, friends, and caregivers the dangers of shaking infants, even in play.
