In the early 1970s, Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana created National Good Neighbor Day. In 1978, United States President Jimmy Carter issued Proclamation 4601 making it an official national holiday.

National Good Neighbor Day on September 28th creates an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other better. This day acknowledges and celebrates the importance of a good neighbor.

Many people around celebrate the United Nations’ (UN) World Tourism Day, which is on September 27 each year. The day aims to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values.

Autumnal Equinox

There are two equinoxes every year – in September (Autumnal) and March (Spring) – when the Sun shines directly on the Equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal. The equinox in September is considered the first day of the fall Season.

National CleanUp Day was created by hiking enthusiasts Steve Jewett and Bill Willoughby in partnership with Clean Trails, a nonprofit that works to keep the outdoors clean. The unofficial holiday raises awareness about cleanliness and reducing litter and is observed the third Saturday in September.

The observance encourages people to make an effort to reduce littering and to recycle so that the nature around us remains clean and devoid of garbage.

International Country Music Day was established in the 1950s and is held each year on September 17th. On this special day, country music festivals are held at various venues around the world. Lovers of country music gather to listen to live music acts while drinking and dancing.

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its partners promote International Literacy Day to underline the significance of literacy for healthy societies, with a strong emphasis on epidemics and communicable diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

The Ring of Fire around the Great Sacandaga Lake is held every year on the Sunday before Labor Day. Though unofficial, it is an end of summer ritual first introduced in 1988.

Bonfires are lit on both private land and shoreline businesses, who often also have special events to celebrate the evening. At almost any vantage point on the Lake, you can see the fires (and fireworks) even those across the Lake.

The first Labor Day was held in 1882, and its origins stem from the Central Labor Union's desire to create a holiday for workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894.
