In accordance with Article 16 and related New York Agriculture and Markets Law, the Fulton County Weights & Measures Department promotes equity and fairness in all consumer transactions involving weight, measure, count or pricing.

The Weights and Measures program is important to ensure confidence and fairness in the marketplace. The old Latin saying “caveat emptor” – or – “let the buyer beware” needs the effort of the Weights and Measures Department to protect both the buyer and the business owner. The buyer is assured that they get what they pay for and the business owner is assured of marketplace based on fair competition.

Weights and Measures annually inspects and tests all commercially used weighing and measuring devices for both accuracy and proper operation. NYS certified weights and measuring devices are used during these testing procedures.

W & M certifies all calibrations on gas pumps yearly, when there is a complaint, or the pump is recalibrated.

W & M certifies all home heating oil meter on delivery trucks are accurate and the delivery ticket is correct.

W & M Randomly checks wood pellets at stores and dealers. We have a NYS Certified Scale that we use.

W & M will go to the station and check the electronic print out for water volume.

Then we have paste that we put on a wooden dip stick and stick the underground tank.

If there is water, the paste changes color, and we close the pumos until the water is removed.

The complaintive is always notified of our findings.

W & M randomly takes 12 samples each month, from different stations

They are sent to the lab and we are emailed the results.

W & M checks all credit card readers in the county as often as possible. We have keys to open all units and look for skimmers.

The safest way is to go into the store and pay.

Weights & Measures also participates in the New York Petroleum Quality program.

This involves collecting gasoline and diesel fuel samples yearly, on a random basis, throughout Fulton County. These samples are then sent to an independent contract laboratory for chemical testing and Analysis. These tests assure that the fuel purchased by consumers meets all appropriate quality/octane standards and that the fuel dispensers are properly labeled.
