Department of Social Services - Preventive Services

Preventive Services are services provided to families and children when there is a documented risk to the children of placement in foster care. Preventive Services are supportive and rehabilitative. Families are assessed for strengths and needs and a service plan is developed with the family. The goal is to strengthen, support and preserve the family unit, to reduce the risk of maltreatment and insure the safety of the child.

Preventive Services are provided to children of all age, including adolescents. Preventive Services are available to families where an older child is exhibiting behavioral issues at home, in school or in the community. Staff that work with adolescents regularly work with the local probation department and law enforcement.

Preventive Services goal is to improve family functioning so that children can remain in their own home and prevent foster care placement.
